Most general readers associate the Texas Rangers with men on horseback who took on Mexicans, Indians, and outlaws to tame Texas in the nineteenth century. I too had in mind a complete history of the Rangers. By the time they dismounted and took to automobiles, however, I had a full book. I intend Lone Star Lawmen to be that history.

I embarked on this history with a bias that I expected would dominate the work. General and scholarly reading, together with the periodic effusions of critics in the media, had fostered a negative view of the Texas Rangers in the twentieth century.

I did not think they would fare well in my treatment. Except for the decade of the Mexican Revolution, however, I found little to support this recurrent stereotype.

I have not hesitated to criticize where I felt it warranted. But I have found little to fault in the decades since They retained much of their character as Old West lawmen while many other states moved forward in police method and organization. Afterthe Rangers combined with the highway patrol in the newly created Department of Public Safety.

Thus the twentieth century featured two breeds of Texas Rangers, the old and the new. But the new kept the name of the old and clung to the history, the traditions, and even the legendry that had gained pride and renown for the old.

Like other states, Texas has a criminal investigative arm of state government. The years until are also preserved in the records of the Adjutant General. When the Rangers moved to the Department of x Preface Public Safety, they took with them their records for to As late as the s, doctoral students used these records in the basement of the Department of Public Safety headquarters in Austin.

They are no longer there, nor in the state archives, and all attempts to learn what happened to them have met with failure. No one at the department knows, or professes to know.

Anecdotal revelations suggest deliberate destruction or a history of sporadic purloining. In the early s the department turned over a body of records to the state archives. They begin in the early s and end in the mids. Fortunately, the state archives preserves the papers of the successive governors for part of my period, from to As my endnotes reveal, I have relied on these works where they cite records now missing.

As a partial substitute for this vital base of original sources, I commend the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, which houses archives rich in Ranger history. Throughout the twentieth century, some Rangers kept copies of many of the documents they sent or received, as well as newspaper scrapbooks and pictorial material, and in retirement donated them to the Hall of Fame.

Nevertheless, I am grateful to the following for helping in both direct and indirect ways:Program generators (Computer programs) Filed under: Generators (Computer programs) Partial Evaluation and Automatic Program Generation (c), by Neil D.
